York railway station
York railway station serves the city of York in the United Kingdom. It opened in 1877 when the first train left to Scarborough. Boasting 11 platforms, the station operates southern and northern destinations including London, Hull, Manchester, and Doncaster. After 3 years of constructing the station became the largest railway station in Britain, confirming York’s status as the heart of the rail network. The present station itself was designed by Thomas Prosser, the North Eastern Railway’s architect. Widely admired, large, and curved roof made of iron and glass overhangs the platforms. The entire station is built in the form of a curve, which makes this “monument to extravagance” all the more impressive.
