Travelling from Brisbane to Sydney by Train

video

The Brisbane to Sydney train is one of Australia's most iconic rail journeys — a scenic overnight ride through the diverse landscapes of Queensland and New South Wales. The XPT train service, operated by NSW TrainLink, runs as a direct train between Brisbane Roma Street Station and Sydney Central Station, covering approximately 913 km (567 miles) through regional New South Wales. There is typically one departure per day from Brisbane, with the latest train leaving Roma Street at 13:30 local time and arriving at Sydney Central the following morning. Book your tickets in advance — departures are limited and the XPT train sells out quickly. Make your travel plans more far-reaching with the Australia travel planner — explore the most popular cities and build your own unforgettable trip.

The XPT train offers Economy Class and First Class seating. Economy Class prices typically start from around €98. Sleeper cabins are also available on the overnight service — double bunks for two passengers with a toilet and shower right outside the cabin door, and complimentary breakfast included. The buffet car serves hot meals for lunch and dinner, and passengers are welcome to bring their own food and drinks on board. Please note that the current XPT trains do not have charging ports or Wi-Fi, and mobile reception can be spotty along parts of the route through regional New South Wales — bring a fully charged battery pack and an eye mask for a comfortable overnight journey.

Compared to flying, the Brisbane to Sydney train makes a big difference — it goes city centre to city centre through New South Wales with no airport transfers and no checked luggage queues. Flying with Jetstar, Virgin, or Qantas takes around 1.5 hours but door-to-door time adds significantly. The bus via Greyhound Australia is available twice daily but takes longer than the train through New South Wales. Transport NSW operates connections from Sydney Central onward to the rest of the city. For those who want to relax, sleep, and enjoy the scenic views of coastal regions, rolling hills, and charming towns across New South Wales like Newcastle, Taree, Coffs Harbour, Grafton, and Casino — the train is the most enjoyable way to travel between the two cities.
