Although the striking Nyugati railway station was built over a century ago, today it looks just as impressive as on the day of its grand opening. Nyugati is one of three Budapest train stations, named after the points of the compass, its name meaning "West" in Hungarian. The striking steel-and-glass building was designed by the Gustave Eiffel Company, famously responsible for the eternal symbol of Paris, the majestic Eiffel Tower. The Nyugati train station is among the oldest terminals in Budapest, offering a vast number of domestic and international routes.
In order to explore the interiors of the Nyugati station, get an idea of where to look for its main facilities, and easily find your way around the station when the day of your railway journey comes, you can watch the short video below.
Budapest's Nyugati railway station is nestled at the intersection of Vaci Avenue and Grand Boulevard, not far from such famous tourist attractions as the Dohany Street Synagogue, the Hungarian State Opera, and the Museum of Fine Arts.
The rail station is located in the heart of the city and is easily reachable by public transport. One of the most popular ways to get to the station is via the metro. There is the Budapest's Nyugati metro station (officially known as "Nyugati Palyaudvar"), located right underneath the eponymous rail terminal, served by the North-South (M3 line).
Nyugati is open from 2.30 a.m. to 12.50 a.m., 7 days a week.
Budapest's Nyugati train station boasts a stylish interior and offers a wide choice of top-notch services and in-house facilities. Inside, you can find an information center, several currency exchange points, comfortable waiting areas as well as several eateries. There is also a supermarket nearby in case you need to stock up before the rail journey.
You should look for Budapest's Nyugati luggage storage in the ticket hall near platform 13. The lockers there vary in size so you can choose the one that works best for your luggage. Almost all of them accept Forint coins as payment but a few will accept Euro coins as well.
No, it doesn't. The closest to Nyugati rail station, offering the first-class lounge for travelers is the central Budapest railway station, Keleti.
Unfortunately, there is no direct connection between Nyugati and the Budapest airport. It's possible to take a metro train from the Nyugati Palyaudvar to the Ferihegy station and cover the rest of the way to the airport by bus number 200E (900 if you are traveling at night), but the quickest way to make your way between these major transport hubs is by taking a taxi.
